										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>At Epic we have the privilege of working with primarily two types of clients:&nbsp; The first type is the established, well-funded company, where we help them design and build enterprise software – primarily apps and websites &#8211; to power their existing business needs.&nbsp; The second type of client is the bootstrapping entrepreneur that needs a killer app and/or website to further their ‘aha’ moment.</p>



<p>With the bootstrapping entrepreneur, we have yet to see one who is not energized by an unlimited amount of drive and ideation. But sadly, what’s usually not in abundance are the cash funds to seed their brilliant ideas!</p>



<p>So where can an early stage, cash-strapped company turn to find grassroots funding?&nbsp; Maybe a place that connects everyday people who could really use or engage with what the entrepreneur’s app or website provides…</p>



<p>Let’s talk crowdfunding!</p>



<p>On traditional crowdsourced funding sites like <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com">Kickstarter.com</a>, ordinary folks (not accredited investors) can pledge small amounts of money to a startup that usually has a product or service in development.&nbsp; If the company meets their funding goal, they can later return the favor to the backers in the form of a finished product or service equal in value to the small amount which was pledged by each backer.</p>



<p>This type of crowdfunding can work miracles for the right type of company who has tangible goods, services or some form of art which has a relatively definable value that can be given to backers at a later date if they get funded.&nbsp; However, if a startup is either in need of a larger amount of cash, say up to a million dollars, and/or has a concept that’s more centered around an intangible app or website platform, they traditionally have to rely on a very lengthy process of building their own syndicate of angel investors to back a large initial seed round of investment.</p>



<p>However, on May 16<sup>th</sup>, 2016, a brand new funding option became available for that type of startup!&nbsp; In 2017 we have been seeing some amazing mobile/web startups tap this new funding route, referred to as Title III of the JOBS Act and also known as Regulation Crowdfunding, or Reg CF.</p>



<p>Without getting into a long discussion about securities laws and federal statutes, suffice it to say that since 1933 it was illegal to invest in a private startup offering unless you were an accredited investor, as defined by the SEC (must have a net worth of at least $1 million dollars or an annual income of over $200K for the past two years).</p>



<p>Title III / Reg CF funding became law last year, and is part of the federally approved JOBS (Jumpstart Our Business Startups) Act that was originally signed into law in April of 2012.&nbsp; Title III essentially allows, for the first time in 83 years, ordinary people – not just the super rich – to invest in the next Facebook or Uber.</p>



<p>It’s important to note the basic requirements for an issuer (i.e., the company raising funds) about Title III, such as; you can only raise up to $1M during a rolling 12-month period, you must be a U.S. entity, and you may raise funds from both accredited and non-accredited investors.&nbsp;&nbsp; But what’s historic about Title III is that it specifically recognizes a new type of intermediary for CF transactions, called a Funding Portal. &nbsp;Funding Portals are essentially websites connecting issuing companies with investors, all of which are regulated by the SEC and FINRA.&nbsp; These sites act not only as connectors, but they are set up in a way that makes it much easier for entrepreneurs to raise their capital without the worry of violating any of the host of regulations that govern Title III.</p>



<p>To get started in this fast growing method of obtaining crowdsourced equity funding, there are over 30 CF portals that qualify under Title III which your startup can access.&nbsp; However, if you are brand new to raising money this way, we recommend you stick with one of the more established CF portals, which we’ve listed below.</p>



<p>Keep in mind, there are myriad ways to fund your startup.&nbsp; However, which method you choose completely depends on the type of company you have, the network you have (or do not have) available already, the time you have to raise capital, and the amount of equity you are willing to give up. &nbsp;&nbsp;For upstart mobile app and website-based concepts who can demonstrate strong early engagement with their platform, Title III / Reg CF has created one of the most powerful sources of capital raising that we’ve seen in a long time!</p>

<p>In our <a href="https://staging.epicbusinessapps.com/2019/08/27/the-estimate-to-build-your-software-project-is-only-as-good-as-the-discovery-process/">last blog post</a> we started our discussion about the importance of a thorough discovery process which defines the software users’ needs.&nbsp; When done correctly this will lead to a more accurate estimate with a realistic timeline of deliverables.&nbsp; In this post, we’ll focus on what those major milestones are in the software deliverables timeline.</p>



<p>I think everybody has downloaded more than a few apps that are so difficult to sign up for, onboard, and get started that instead, we chose to just remove the app before wasting any more time.&nbsp; The same can be said for certain websites that we’ve all encountered; sites which are downright impossible to navigate, or where it&#8217;s just continually difficult to find the right button, link or search area that we need during any particular phase of our visit to the site.</p>



<p>To prevent this from becoming the user experience of your next app or website, it’s vital to understand the importance of laying the groundwork during the discovery and ideation phase, as well as in the proceeding UX/UI design phase.&nbsp; Skipping too fast through these important phases is often the main reason why one app fails miserably, while another in the same category goes viral!</p>



<p>It&#8217;s great if you&#8217;re ready to work with a design/development firm who can help guide you through the above process, whether that be Epic or another digital agency, but there are several things you can do to create the roadmap for UX/UI success before even engaging someone like us.</p>



<p>The most important thing to remember is “Put it Out There”!&nbsp; By this I simply mean, tell (and show) as many people as you know how a user will interface with your app. &nbsp;What are the exact steps they will take in your app to achieve the results you&#8217;re trying to deliver. By doing this, you test the assumptions in your head with how others might envision that same user experience.  A good way to do this is always with an <a href="https://staging.epicbusinessapps.com/what-is-an-mvp-mobile-app/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" title="MVP app">MVP app</a></p>



<p>If it’s a public-facing consumer app, bring all your Facebook and Instagram friends/followers into the fold.&nbsp; They will also be the most passionate marketers of your app or website when you release your first version. And if it’s an enterprise app for your company, don’t just keep the ideation group within your immediate department or team. Post your ideas on your Intranet.&nbsp; Query those at the copier. Ask other department heads for a 10-minute favor to present at their next team meeting. Most of all, just Put it Out There!</p>



<p>As you are putting it out there, what are some of the tools you can use to gather more useful feedback? This could be as easy as walking friends, family or co-workers through crude storyboards (i.e., rough sketches of screens to help depict user flow) you might draw up, before even commissioning any official design work.&nbsp; Later, it could be as involved as beta-testing multiple prototype versions to different sample user groups. &nbsp;Again, this is something agencies like Epic specialize in, but if you&#8217;re not quite ready to take that step, there are also dozens of very affordable UX/UI testing services on the net and in the app stores which can help you quickly obtain a lot of valuable feedback.&nbsp; Here are just a few, as examples:</p>

<p>There are also free, and practically-free, app and website prototyping software platforms that anyone can learn relatively quickly (a few examples listed below).&nbsp; Whether it’s your ‘aha’ moment that makes you want to quit your job, or you are the employee tasked with creating a digital solution at your work, creating a quick prototype with a handful of finished screen graphics will go a very long way to getting an investor, or your boss, to approve a full digital engagement with a design firm.</p>

<p>Once you’ve decided you are going to put a prototype together to get feedback or raise money, you’ll want to seed your initial proof-of-concept prototype with some professional looking graphics. Keep in mind, there is no shortage of talented individuals and companies with loads of talent in this department.&nbsp; This is a win-win route to take in order for you to have at least 5 or 6 key screens to populate your prototype. If you&#8217;re still not quite ready to pull the trigger on an engagement with a digital agency, here are just a few examples of places to find good designers at affordable prices:</p>

<p>Even the giants like Facebook, Apple and Amazon often release new features too quickly, before having a sufficient user-testing period.&nbsp; Millions spent coding, only to see the final release flop under its own terrible user reviews. It’s a financially painful lesson to learn, but one that can usually be avoided.</p>
